Some years ago I bought a Maxi Models Ferrari 612P kit which I've had on a shelf in various states of completion for some time. The shell is an excellent moulding (if somewhat on the heavy side) of what I think was one of the most beautiful and purposeful Can-Am cars. The resin chassis was never going to work and in some respects the kit had too many detailed parts for it ever be a serious slot car. I'm not into cars which sit on a shelf and never go onto the track. So on impulse after Christmas I decided it was time to complete the Ferrari to go with several other Can-Am cars I have. I decided I wasn't going to lighten the shell for fear of damaging it and therefore it needed a powerful motor and as I had a FlatSix 25k rpm sitting around that was the chosen propulsion. Wide as the Ferrari is a FlatSix was not going to fit as a sidewinder so I had to go angle winder with a Slot.it motor pod and a brass and wire front end. As recommended by Chris Walker the pod is mounted on rubber washers to cut out vibration. Its very fast - probably the quickest car I have - and gets round my track in just over 6 seconds whereas the best I've ever achieved previously is about 6.4 seconds. Nevertheless less its quite easy to drive - stable and predictable. The model depicts the car as it was at the Edmonton Can-Am race. As supplied the kit was for the later '69 car which had a high wing and various other appendages which rather spoilt purity of the original design so I had to modify the engine cover although I haven't filled in the holes for the wing struts just in case I change my mind in the future! You may notice the very small clear windscreen is missing; the reason being that I lost it and anyway it was going to be very difficult to attach without risking a glue disaster. I think the mirror mounting is bit too high so I might modify it. With hindsight I think I would have made proper mesh front wing vents rather than use the kit decals.
